Key takeaways

  • The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not publish a figure for the job title “procurement specialist”. The closest group is buyers and purchasing agents: median $77,710 a year in May 2025.
  • The range is wide: the lowest-paid 10% of buyers and purchasing agents earned less than $48,380 and the highest-paid 10% more than $128,870.
  • Purchasing managers, the group that covers procurement managers and most directors, earned a median $148,080; the top 10% earned more than $223,280.
  • Industry matters: government and professional services paid buyers more than manufacturing or wholesale trade.
  • Compare like with like: same year, same country, same definition of pay. Salary-site averages mix job ads and self-reported pay, so treat them as signals, not facts.

How much does a procurement specialist earn?

A procurement specialist buys goods and services for an organisation: compares suppliers, requests quotes, negotiates terms, places orders and follows up on delivery and contract compliance. In official US statistics, the closest occupation is “buyers and purchasing agents”. Its median annual wage was $77,710 in May 2025, according to the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook. The median wage of all US occupations was $50,980.

The median is the middle value: half the workers earned more, half earned less. It is not an average and it hides a wide range. In May 2025 the lowest-paid 10% of buyers and purchasing agents earned less than $48,380 a year, and the highest-paid 10% more than $128,870. An entry-level procurement specialist usually sits towards the lower part of that range, and a senior procurement specialist with a large portfolio towards the upper part.

Every figure on this page is US data, in US dollars, for the year stated. A wage figure does not include benefits or shares. Figures from other countries or other years are not comparable without adjustment.

What do procurement roles earn, from coordinator to director?

Job titles in procurement vary from one employer to the next. The BLS classifies jobs by duties, not by title, and publishes two procurement groups: buyers and purchasing agents, and purchasing managers. The table matches common titles to the closest group, based on the author’s reading of the BLS duties. Check the duties in the job description, not the title.

Procurement salary by role: common job titles, the closest BLS occupation and its May 2025 annual wages (US)

Two official figures cover most procurement jobs: about $78,000 for buyers and specialists, about $148,000 for managers; seniority moves pay within each range.

The BLS also publishes types of buyers: purchasing agents who buy for the organisation’s own operations, such as chemicals, machinery or office supplies; wholesale and retail buyers who buy goods for resale; and buyers of farm products. A procurement specialist in a company or a public body is usually the first kind. How the function is organised is covered in procurement management, and the steps a specialist runs in the procurement process.

What does a procurement manager earn?

Procurement managers fall in the BLS occupation “purchasing managers”, who oversee buyers and purchasing agents, handle the more complex procurement tasks and set procurement policies and procedures. Their median annual wage was $148,080 in May 2025. The lowest-paid 10% earned less than $92,490 and the highest-paid 10% more than $223,280.

Senior procurement managers, global procurement managers and strategic procurement managers are not published separately. They fall in the same group, and their pay usually sits in the upper part of the range, depending on the size of the spend they manage and the number of people they lead. The BLS notes that purchasing managers typically need several years of experience, often as buyers or purchasing agents first.

What does a procurement analyst earn?

The BLS publishes no figure for procurement analysts. When the role includes buying, such as analysing price proposals before a buyer negotiates, it fits the duties of buyers and purchasing agents, whose tasks include analysing price proposals, financial reports and other information to set reasonable prices. Use that group’s median of $77,710 and its range as a reference, not as the analyst’s own figure.

A procurement analyst who works mostly on data, for example spend reports and savings tracking, may be classified elsewhere by an employer. In that case, compare the job with others that list the same duties in the same city. The spend work itself is explained in spend analysis.

What does a procurement director or chief procurement officer earn?

The BLS does not separate procurement directors, heads of procurement or vice presidents of procurement from purchasing managers. The upper part of the purchasing managers’ range is the closest official reference: in May 2025, the highest-paid 10% earned more than $223,280 a year. That threshold is a floor for the top tenth, not a typical director salary.

Chief procurement officers have no official US series. At listed companies, executive pay often includes shares, which are not part of a wage. Treat any single number for a CPO salary with care, and check the source, the year, the country and whether it counts base pay only or total pay.

Does the industry change procurement pay?

Yes. The BLS publishes median wages for the five industries that employ the most people in each group. Government, outside state and local education and hospitals, paid buyers the most of the five.

Median annual wage by industry for buyers and purchasing agents and for purchasing managers, US, May 2025
IndustryBuyers and purchasing agentsPurchasing managers
Government (excluding state and local education and hospitals)$95,780$150,920
Professional, scientific and technical services$88,830$168,060
Management of companies and enterprises$83,990$167,870
Manufacturing$77,890$136,610
Wholesale trade$71,640$135,550

For buyers, the gap between the best- and least-paid of these industries is about $24,000 a year; for managers, about $32,000.

Manufacturing is the largest employer in both groups: 22% of buyers and purchasing agents and 23% of purchasing managers in 2025. IT procurement, supply chain procurement and procurement engineer roles are not published separately; depending on their duties, they usually fall in one of the same two groups, where the industry can explain part of the difference.

What do government procurement jobs pay?

In US federal agencies, contracting staff, such as contract specialists, are classified in the Contracting series, 1102, and paid on the General Schedule (GS). The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) publishes a base table and separate locality tables that add a percentage by area, such as Washington-Baltimore or “Rest of United States”. A job posting states the grade and the locality, so the pay can be read from the tables.

2026 General Schedule base annual rates at step 1 for selected grades (OPM, before locality pay)
GradeBase annual rate, step 1 (2026)
GS-7$43,106
GS-9$52,727
GS-11$63,795
GS-12$76,463
GS-13$90,925
GS-14$107,446
GS-15$126,384 (step 10: $164,301)

Locality pay raises every base rate, so read the locality table named in the posting before comparing a federal offer with a private one.

Public buying outside federal agencies, in states, cities and other public bodies, follows each employer’s own pay scale. How public procurement works is explained in government procurement.

How should you read procurement salary figures from salary websites?

Salary websites publish figures for exact titles, such as “procurement consultant salary” or “procurement lead salary”, that official statistics do not cover. Their figures usually come from job ads and pay reported by users, so they change often and depend on who answered. They are useful to compare offers in one city, not as a fact about a profession.

  • Check the year and the country of the figure.
  • Check whether it is base pay or total pay with bonus.
  • Check whether it is a median or an average; a few high salaries raise an average.
  • Never mix two sources in one comparison: a BLS median and a salary-site average measure different things.

How do you move to a higher procurement salary?

The BLS describes the usual path. A bachelor’s degree is typical for entry-level jobs, in fields such as business, finance or supply management. Buyers and purchasing agents usually receive a few months of on-the-job training. Purchasing managers typically need several years of experience, often as buyers first. Certification is optional, according to the BLS.

The BLS projects employment of purchasing managers, buyers and purchasing agents to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, with about 53,600 openings a year, most of them to replace people who move to other occupations or leave the labour force, for example to retire. The main credentials, from CIPS to ISM’s CPSM and the public-sector certifications, are compared in procurement certification.

Questions

What is the average salary for a procurement specialist?

Official US statistics give a median rather than an average. Buyers and purchasing agents, the closest official group to procurement specialists, earned a median $77,710 a year in May 2025, according to the BLS. The lowest-paid 10% earned less than $48,380 and the highest-paid 10% more than $128,870.

What does an entry-level procurement specialist earn?

The BLS does not publish pay by experience level. The lower part of the buyers and purchasing agents range is the closest guide: the lowest-paid 10% earned less than $48,380 a year in May 2025. Entry-level pay also depends on the industry, the city and the employer.

What is the difference between a procurement officer salary and a procurement manager salary?

A procurement officer usually buys and fits the buyers and purchasing agents group, with a median of $77,710 in May 2025. A procurement manager leads buyers and sets procedures, and fits purchasing managers, with a median of $148,080. Titles vary, so check the duties of the post.

Is procurement a well-paid career?

Compared with all US occupations, yes. In May 2025, the median for buyers and purchasing agents was $77,710 and for purchasing managers $148,080, against $50,980 for all occupations. Pay grows mainly with responsibility: moving from buying to leading buyers is the largest step.

What does a procurement consultant earn?

There is no official US figure for procurement consultants. Consultants work for firms or on their own, and pay varies with the firm, the client and the share of bonus. Figures on salary websites exist, but check their year, country and method before relying on them.
